October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the statistics are staggering.

      • 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime
      • Approximately 30% of all new women cancer diagnoses will be breast cancer.
      • Every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States
One statistic that is not so widely known:
40 – 100% of cancer survivors suffer from some type of sexual dysfunction.

Survivors can experience arousal disorder, issues with lubrication, problems orgasming, a lack of desire, and sexual pain. Psychological factors can be caused by loss of fertility, body image and unattractiveness and loss of sexual self. Research also shows higher rates of depression and anxiety and medications to treat these conditions often further negatively impact sexual function.

But, there is HOPE. There are treatment options.
From medications and lubricants to pelvic floor physical therapy and counseling – there are providers who can help survivors reclaim their sexual health.

“The biggest takeaway I want for survivors and for any woman struggling with sexual dysfunction is: You are not alone. You should not ‘just be happy to be alive’ and you do not have to live without desire, sex, and intimacy with your parter.”Dr. Somi Javaid.
